ABOUT US

We believe the best theatre begins with play.

WHAT IS BLADDER & STRING?

Bladder & String is a theatre company based in the West Midlands, creating imaginative and original live performance. Our work blends devising, music and creative play to tell memorable stories.

We are interested in theatre that feels alive: work made through collaboration, curiosity and a willingness to follow unexpected ideas. Play sits at the heart of our process, creating space to experiment, take risks, fail, discover and find what might otherwise remain hidden.

Alongside making and developing new performance, we create opportunities for artists and audiences to come together through workshops, Theatre Lab and other creative encounters. Whether making a show, exploring an idea or working with others, we value sensitivity, generosity and curiosity, and believe that the most exciting discoveries happen when we allow ourselves to play.

SENSITIVITY, GENEROSITY, CURIOSITY & PLAY

Sensitivity

Sensitivity to ourselves and those that we work with. Being aware of the subtle ways in which we communicate

Generosity

Generosity to each other and to our projects, offering ideas, time, patience and our whole hearts as we tackle each task.

Curiosity

Curiosity to the work we make and the people we work with, recognising the potential that everything we encounter can hold.

Play

Play, the pleasure in doing something, just for the sake of it. We minimise the voice that says we shouldn’t or what if it doesn’t work and allow ourselves to exist in the moment.

THE PEOPLE WE WORK WITH

We work with a range of creatives and artists, each bringing their own skills, experiences and perspectives. We love bringing those differences together in the rehearsal room — combining ideas and ways of working to create new possibilities.

Every collaboration is different, and that’s the point. The people in the room shape the work we make, creating performances and ideas that couldn’t have been made in quite the same way with anyone else.

Bladder & String is led by theatre maker and director Connor Alexander.
